Is Sheet Metal Siding More Expensive?

Both sheet metal siding and metal roofing have very high ROI’s (return on investment). So, when you consider the cost, you have to look at the upfront cost versus the cost over time.

Sheet metal siding will likely be more expensive than vinyl siding, for sure, but sheet metal has several important advantages over vinyl siding.

The biggest difference between sheet metal siding and vinyl or PVC (polyvinyl chloride) siding is the environmental one.

Sheet metal siding (and roofing) is almost 100% recyclable. Vinyl siding goes to the landfill. It’s very difficult and expensive to recycle it.

So, if you are looking at the cost of a product like sheet metal siding, you need to consider what you’re getting for the price. For example, sheet metal siding is not flammable. Vinyl siding will melt in a fire, and wood or engineered wood will make excellent kindling.

Sheet metal made of steel is heavy and requires professional installation which is one of the reasons for the higher cost. It’s not a DIY project.

It’s hard to quote a price for sheet metal siding without having some more information. There are different types of metal (be prepared to pay a fortune for copper), and there’s also the question of whether you want to add any kind of insulation.

Sheet metal siding can also be coated to prevent or delay rust and corrosion. Painting it is also possible, although painting like installation is also not a DIY job.

It’s safe to say that sheet metal siding does add significant value to a property because buyers are keenly aware of the advantages of sheet metal.

Wood siding is pretty, but it has one of the poorest returns on investment. It’s also not cheap.
