Selecting the best insulation for your metal-clad building can be tricky. When it comes to metal-clad buildings, the insulation addresses two important goals. These are preventing moisture from collecting or entering through condensation and stabilizing the building’s interior temperature.

Insulating metal structures is crucial because metal is obviously a better heat conductor than timber. If your building has no insulation it cannot retain the heat in cold seasons. Your metal-cladding professional can advise you on which type of insulation is best suited for your specific application.

Here are the most common types of insulation.

1. Loose-fill:

This is a type of insulation is made up of small fibrous pellets or even loose fibers. Much skill is involved in placing this type of insulation and determining how much to put where.

2. Blanket and batt:

Mineral fibres of processed fibreglass make up blanket and batt insulation. Batt is cheap but it must be fixed perfectly for full effectiveness. Blanket and batt insulation have R-values of R3 per inch.

3. Spray foam insulation:

Spray foam insulation is made up of a liquid with a polymer and foaming agent. It can be sprayed into ceilings, floors, and walls where it relaxes to suit the space. Spray foam is great for unusual areas or shapes where there may be several obstructions. Sometimes you may see it on TV as purple.

4. Fibreglass insulation:

This is one of the cheapest and most common types of insulation for metal structures. Fibreglass insulation arrives in rolls and requires special handling because it's easy to get the fibreglass particles under your skin.

5. Reflective foil:

This type of insulation is waterproof and its surface brightens the interior of the building.
