Will sheet metal cladding make my home too hot in the summer months?

Answer: Sheet metal will not make your home any more hot than other siding types.

When deciding on what siding to use on your home, it is important to weigh out the pros and cons for each available option. Sheet metal cladding is one option that has come a long way in recent years. As with any siding option, there are pros and cons for choosing this paneling. Thankfully, one of the more common negatives is actually a myth, and not true at all.

Siding plays an important role with your home. Not only does siding provide part of the main exterior aesthetic of the structure, but it is also responsible for protecting the structure and providing part of the buildings insulation.

Sheet metal cladding has many benefits, including being low maintenance and needing almost no attention after being installed. It is very durable, being able to withstand most environmental factors. It is also resistant to mold and fungal growth since it does not absorb water. Metal siding is also a very cost effective option.

When looking at the possible negatives to metal siding, one common misconception is that it is a poor insulator, and will trap heat inside your home, especially in the hot summer months. Yes, metal does absorb heat, but it does not actually heat up more then other siding options. In addition, many paneling options actually come with finishes that are designed to reflect sunlight (and certain colours are more effective at this as well), meaning they are more resistant to heat then some other siding options.

Even with the metal siding absorbing some heat, the insulation behind the siding is the primary defense against this heat transfering into your home. A properly insulated building envelope will keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter, regardless of the siding material you choose.

Choosing a siding material during a home renovation can be difficult, but you can rest assured that no matter which siding material you choose, there is no wrong choice.
